Kumasi Children’s park has become a graveyard for the dead. – Assembly Member

The Assembly Member for the Afful Nkwanta Electoral Area in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, is pleading with the government and security services to put a stop to rising criminal activity in and near the Kumasi Children’s Park.

According to Daniel Otuo Acheampong, they pick up at least two dead bodies from the abandoned children’s recreational centre every month with the help of the Zongo Police command because the facility harbors criminals.

The Assembly members told EIB Network’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Isaac Justice Bediako, that, “every two weeks I pick one dead body meaning averagely I call the Zongo police command to pick two dead bodies monthly’’

He explained that the criminals feel extremely protected in the abandoned facility’s decaying library, which serves as their home.

“There are a lot of armed robbers and thieves around this building, they are trigger happy and have been shooting people here for their bags and phones. Some of the criminals also die here when they survive robbery attack in unsuccessful robbery operations when they sustain injuries’’.

He added, in 2020 former Education Minister Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh signed a deal with Ghana Library Board to rehabilitate the park. The contractor brought a pile of sand to start the process, but the educational ministry provided no explanation as to why the project had paused.

“The abandoned Kumasi Children Park is creating a lot of trouble for my electoral area, we are not safe. All we wish is for the government and the Kumasi city management to renovate the facility to check crime. Nothing more’’ he pleaded.
