A key member of the New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has praised the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin after the latter appeared in parliament dressed as a king.
Alban Bagbin appeared in parliament for the first time in 2022, dressed in a blue kente, a white short-sleeved shirt, and a matching gold crown, as traditional leaders do.
It will be recalled that the Speaker of Parliament said that he would only wear the gown for ceremonial occasions and would wear more local clothing when presiding over the House as part of his efforts to impact positive change and show leadership while doing so.
“Apart from focusing on corruption, you will see me not only speaking but also acting to reform the dress code and code of behavior of Members of Parliament starting next year (i.e. 2022).” As leaders, we must lead by example and provide direction.
“As a result, you will not see me wearing that dress code, a suit and that aristocratic cloak or gown, very often.” You may notice me wearing more traditional attire in the future. Late last year, he said in an interview on GTV’s Momeen Tonight that he might only wear that (suit, cloak) on ceremonial events.
Alban Bagbin did not disappoint when he came on the Chamber floor on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, as he had promised.
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, reacting to the Speaker of Parliament’s new style, expressed delight at what he had seen, saying that it makes the leader of parliament look “culturally, representatively hip!”
He was quick to add, though, that he hopes the Speaker’s new look will not lead to kingly aspirations in his leadership.
“I kinda like it!” Original! culturally, representatively cool! So long as he doesn’t get majestically carried away with kingly thoughts and behavior.” he tweeted
