Mahama’s 5am post about Bawumia leaves Ghanaians wondering

Former President John Dramani Mahama has written a cryptic response to the government’s controversial Electronic Transaction Levy, or E-levy, Bill, which is set to be reintroduced in Parliament by the Finance Ministry.

Targeting how the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lashed at his administration when he introduced new taxes during his time as President.

On Wednesday, January 26, Mahama uploaded an early morning Facebook post quoting a Joy FM interview in which Dr. Bawumia questioned the Mahama government about the imposition of several taxes.

According to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s interview, “talk is cheap,” according to John Dramani Mahama.

“Hmm! “Talk is cheap,” the former President captioned a video he shared on his verified Facebook page.

In the same interview, a ‘passionate’ Bawumia, who was at the time the opposition leader Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-running Addo’s mate, argued that the government’s adoption of a one percent tax on investments proves that the Mahama-led government was desperate because they mismanaged the economy.

“…this is what happens when you grow desperate, when you mismanage the economy into this hole.” Because you don’t have any other options, anything sounds amazing to you. This is the issue: they are attempting to put taxes on anything taxable, that can be taxed convincingly… All of these things are affecting the economy; these taxes are damaging the economy; as a result, you won’t have growth, and if you don’t get growth, you won’t get revenue, and if you don’t get revenue, you’ll have to raise taxes to generate money…,” Dr. Bawumia explained.

The film has been resurrected by Mahama at a time when the current NPP government, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is attempting to levy a 1.75 percent tax on Ghanaians’ electronic transactions.
