A Koforidua High Court has ordered the auction of a number of vehicles belonging to the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Eastern Region to settle a GH3,471,240.72 judgment debt.

The court issued this order in response to a petition brought before it by 102 Eastern Region teachers who are owed salary arrears of more than five years.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Gifty Dekyem, ordered the Ghana Police Service to send some troops to the Eastern Region to protect and assist the bailiffs in carrying out the Writ of Fieri Facias.

So far, the Eastern Regional Education Director’s Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number GC 5985-20 and the Regional Accountant’s Toyota truck with registration number GV 778-20 have been impounded.

However, the Birim South Municipal Director of Education, whose vehicle was discovered, managed to flee with the car keys.

The group’s leader, Eric Effah Darko, who spoke to Citi News, stated that they only need their money.

They were even willing to forego the interest on the arrears, according to him.

Mr. Darko explained, “Our lawyer was fighting for the interest on our behalf, but we said they were our employers, so just fight for our money for us… because they were our employers, we wanted to make things easier for them.”
