“My wife is focusing on her philanthropic work” – Kyei-Mensah Bonsu speaks on wife’s MP ambition rumours

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, has rejected rumours  that he is grooming his wife, Mrs. Irene Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, to follow him as MP once he retires.

In an interview with Joy News, the Suame MP denied the rumors, saying that he had no ambitions to force his wife into direct politics.

According to him, his wife’s charity efforts through her non-profit organization were encouraging such rumors.

He made the claim after announcing that he will not seek re-election to Parliament once his current term ends in 2024.

“I’m not interested in competing again.” People seem to assume that I’m grooming my wife to take over from me because of what I’ve said and [because] of what my wife is doing, particularly in the Ashanti region. There isn’t any such thing. She has her own foundation, and every year she visits the constituency to provide medical screenings for the residents.

“She wasn’t even in the constituency late last year.” She was stationed in the Kumasi Central Prison, where she was in charge of the inmates, as well as the prison employees and their families. I believe they treated about 2,000 people at the Kumasi Central Prison, including not just medical screening but also administering proper medication and feeding them. People tend to assume I’m grooming her to take over from me because of the things she does,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu remarked.
