At Fumesua in the Ashanti Region’s Ejisu Municipality, a driver’s mate was declared dead after an articulated truck filled with bags of rice collided with another truck loaded with cement on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.
The two trucks, one carrying rice with the registration number GR-2550-E and the other cement with the registration number GW-1990-X, were all heading out of Ejisu direction towards Kumasi when the incident occurred.
The deceased, Abdul Wahid Tahiru, 25, died on the spot, while the driver, Martin Musa, was taken to the Ejisu Government Hospital with serious injuries.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been placed in the mortuary of the Juaben Government Hospital.
“Two trucks; one carrying rice and the other carrying cement were traveling from the Ejisu direction towards Kumasi,” ASP Francis Mireku, Ejisu Divisional Commander of the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), said. When they reached to the Alhaji Salia stretch, the cement truck tried to negotiate offloading some of the bags of cement, so the mate alighted and tried to stop some oncoming cars, but the over-speeding rice truck did not spot the driving mate, and they collided, resulting in the accident.”
He claimed that because the intersection of the Ejisu-Kumasi highway is in good condition, cars overspeed when traveling the length, causing the area to become accident-prone.
After the event, the truck driver and his friend absconded with the cement, he claimed.
The two vehicles have also been towed from the accident scene, according to ASP Francis Mireku.
