Senegal to name a Stadium after Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane, a Senegalese professional footballer who plays as a winger for Liverpool in the Premier League, will have a stadium named after him in his home nation of Senegal.

The 29-year-old soccer star was acclaimed as the hero of the just concluded AFCON 2021 in Cameroon after hitting the game-winning penalty against Egypt in the Nations Cup final to give Senegal its first ever AFCON triumph.

Sadio Mane will have a stadium named after him in Senegal to commemorate his outstanding efforts at the event, which included scoring the game-winning penalty that helped Senegal defeat Egypt 4-2.

According to Goal, Abdoulaye Diop, the Mayor of Sedhiou in Senegal, has announced plans to name the city’s new stadium after Liverpool midfielder Sadio Mane as a reward for his exploits at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Sadio Mané has honoured Senegal, the region of Sédhiou and the whole of Casamance. I would like, through this decision to give the name of Sadio Mané to the Stadium of Sédhiou, to express the recognition of all the worthy sons of the region, towards a man who makes known to the whole humanity, Bambali and its chief town of region, Sédhiou. Sadio Mané richly deserves this gift,” Abdoulaye Diop said.

Sédhiou is a Senegalese town in the Casamance region, close to the Casamance River, with a population of 24,213 people in 2013. It is the administrative center of the Sédhiou Region.

Sadio Mane scored three goals and added two assists in all of the Teranga Lions’ games in Cameroon.

Aliou Cisse’s men were honored by the president of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall, upon their triumphal homecoming following their AFCON victory on Tuesday in the Presidential Palace.

Each player received the country’s highest honor, Grand Officers of the National Order of the Lion, from President Sall.

Aside from the honor, each player and member of the coaching staff earned a 50 million franc CFA ($87,412) bonus and a 200 square meter plot of land in Dakar, the country’s capital.
