Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police, has urged media associations to explain the police service’s responsibility to their members, which includes making arrests.

According to a report by Graphic Online, the IGP indicated at a meeting with members of the Ghana Journalists Association on Friday that the police are empowered by their mandate to make arrests and detentions, especially when a person refuses to cooperate in an inquiry.

“He said no one is above the law,” according to Graphic. “As a result, the laws must be made to operate in the country.”

Dr. Dampare urged media institutions to criticize unprofessional behaviors that are based on criminality while discussing how they support the work of the police.

According to the IGP, maintaining silent on such problems will incite those who indulge in such behavior.

The IGP emphasized the need of media professionalism, saying that journalists are responsible for verifying material before disseminating it.

“He also advised that criminality education be increased, that media practitioners be held accountable for their activities, and that supporters of media practitioners who break the law be criticized since it encourages irresponsibility,” according to Graphic.
