Police foil attack on motorists, gun down one robber at Obuasi

On the feeder route between Nyamebekyere and Kokotenten in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, a police operation stopped an attempted robbery on passengers and motorists.

A suspected robber was shot during the operation.

“Four other suspected robbers who were not within the range of the Police avoided arrest and are being chased,” according to a police statement.

“According to the police report, intelligence was gathered around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2022, that certain persons were preparing to rob travellers on the feeder route between Nyamebekyere and Kokotenten, which is a robbery prone region,” the Police Service noted in a statement.

When a crew was deployed to that stretch of road in a private Hyundai Grace, they came upon five individuals equipped with firearms.

When the armed men saw the private Hyundai Grace vehicle, they opened fire with the intention of robbing the passengers.

The Police squad returned fire, killing one of the suspected thieves, while the remainder escaped into the bush, far away from the Police team.

Yaw Obolo, a 35-year-old man, was eventually confirmed as the dead.

The scene yielded a locally built single-barrel rifle, eight (BB live cartridges, and one iTel mobile phone.

Residents in the surrounding community aided the police as they searched the area for the remaining robbers, but they were unsuccessful.

Yaw Obolo, the deceased, has been put in the mortuary of the Obuasi Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

The Police Administration has stated that they will do everything possible to bring the other alleged robbers to justice.

The public is also requested to provide credible information to the police in order to assist in the apprehension of such criminals.
