Five sports sanctions Russia faces as a result of the war with Ukraine.

As a result of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has been subjected to a slew of sanctions. On February 24, 2022, the Russian Armed Forces continued their war on Ukraine. Russia has suffered certain negative effects as a result of this sad tragedy.

Here are lists of five negative effects of the war on Russi.

a. The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has barred Russia from participating in the 2022 World Cup qualifying series. This arose as a result of Russia’s opponents declining to play them in the play-offs; Poland, the Czech Republic, and Sweden have all withdrawn from the competition. 2. St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city, was set to host the UEFA Champions League Final in 2021/2022, but the European Governing Body canceled the event after the war broke out. The decision was made just 24 hours after Russia launched its invasion on Ukraine. The UEFA Executive Committee has now offered Paris the final, which will take place on May 28, 2022.

b. As a result of the war, Russian teams competing in various European Club Competitions are expected to suffer some negative consequences. They are unable to play their games at home. Spartak Moscow has thus been barred from competing in the Europa League by UEFA. Later in March, the Russian team was scheduled to meet RB Leipzig in the knockout stage. This has an impact on the National Team’s performance in UEFA national competitions.

c. Russia’s major corporation Gazprom has fallen out of favor with its customers. The name of Schalke 04’s long-time partner, Gazprom, has been taken from their shirts. The Russian firm is also a sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, and as a result, it has lost its relationship with all of these organizations. Manchester United’s official airline sponsor, Aeroflot, has also had their contract terminated by the English giants. Aerflot has been barred from flying in the United Kingdom’s airspace.

d. After their owner, Roman Abramovich, announced that he is selling the club, Chelsea FC in England is also set to suffer the consequences of the war. Roman has long been associated to Russia’s Kremlin and is a close ally of Russia’s Prime Minister, Vladmir Putin. A travel restriction to the United Kingdom had been imposed on Chelsea’s owner. He has now been barred from entering the United Kingdom indefinitely.
