Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock on Oscar stage after he made jokes about his wife

The 94th Academy Awards (2022 Oscars) were full of surprises, as many people were stunned when American actor Will Smith smacked Chris Rock on the Oscar stage live.

As the 2022 Oscars neared their conclusion, a furious exchange between American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director Christopher Julius Rock, better known as Chris Rock, and actor Will Smith stunned the audience.

Chris returned to the stage for his Oscar presentation for the documentary feature, but instead chose to make jokes about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, due to her newly cut hair, which she explained as a medical ailment some time before.

Will was enraged at Chris Rock’s joke and stormed onto the Oscar stage, slapping him across the face and yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!” as he returned to his seat.

The episode astounded everyone because no one expected such behavior; Lupita Nyong’o, a Kenyan-Mexican actress who was seated next to Will, showed how surprised she was.

The incident occurred before Will Smith won his first Oscar of the night on Sunday, March 27, 2022, when the Oscars were held.

Will Smith later sent an apology to the Academy Board of Governors as well as his fellow nominees for his actions, which have sparked much discussion and outrage.

“I want to apologize to the Academy,” Smith said.

He again added; “I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Tim and Trevor and Zack and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard,’ Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams.”

A statement from the Los Angeles Police Department confirms that they are aware of what happened yesterday night, and that Chris Rock has declined to file an official police report, based to the information gathered.

“If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report,” the police said.

The academy also took to Twitter on Monday morning, March 28, 2022, to make a brief comment about the event.

They wrote;

“The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
