Claim only GH¢127m released into Health Insurance Fund false – Health Ministry

Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, the Minister of Health, has denied charges made by Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member of Parliament on the Health Committee, that only GHS127 million out of nearly GH2 billion had been released into the National Health Insurance Fund.

Although the Minister could not say how much money had been released into the fund, he did say that a substantial sum had been set aside for it.

The Health Minister responded to the allegation during a debate on the President’s State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, saying the Finance Minister would release the actual data at the proper time.

“You can’t use budget projections to come here and put dust in the eyes of the public unless they come out with proper, correct [numbers].”

However, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, described the minister’s posture as “exceedingly shocking.”

He went on to say that the Finance Minister has never given an account of the National Health Insurance Fund in the House since he took office.

“He has never accounted for National Health Insurance Funds on this floor since he became the minister responsible for Finance,” Mr. Akandoh remarked.
