I built, managed Odartey Lamptey’s Glow Lamp Sch; I deserve 50% share – Ex wife to court

Odartey Lamptey’s ex-wife has asked the Accra High Court, which is hearing her divorce case with her ex-footballer husband, to give her half of Odartey Lamptey’s Glow Lamp International School and Golden Lion Soccer Academy, among other properties, in addition to the Dome Kwabenya house already given to her.

The Glow Lamp School, as well as the football star’s other assets, such as a soccer academy, have done well over the years, with a lot of money pouring in from the school. Gloria Odartey Lamptey informed the court that it would not have happened if it hadn’t been for her efforts, as she influenced the investment and oversaw its implementation.

Gloria “Odartey Lamptey” argued in court that while her then-husband, now ex-husband, was busy with his footballing career abroad, she spent a lot of time ensuring the school was built to modern standards and that after it was completed, she served as Proprietress, guiding the school to its current status as one of the best in Accra.

Glow Lamp School is one of the best schools in the Greater Accra Region, having scored 100 percent in each of the last ten BECEs, and its enrollment continues to expand.

Gloria Lamptey sought a court order to give her 50 percent ownership of the institution, which reportedly makes more than Ghc1.5 million in earnings before taxes each year.

Argument about the veil of incorporation

Gloria’s claim was dismissed by the court after hearing from Odartey Lamptey’s lawyers, who begged with the court “not to disrupt the veil of incorporation of the school as it is a separate legal entity from Mr. Odartey Lamptey as a person.”

Mrs. Odartey Lamptey was paid a monthly salary as a staff member of the school at the time she served as project supervisor and then as proprietess, according to the lawyers, therefore she couldn’t have done it out of charity.

Gloria’s plea to have the ex-footballers assets equally divided, particularly the school – Glow Lamp – was fully denied by Justice Cecilia Don-Chebe Agbevey after hearing arguments from both parties.

Gloria was given Nii Odartey Lamptey’s property in Dome, as he had requested, although Gloria had stated that she preferred Nii Odartey Lamptey’s 7-bedroom estate in East Legon.
