Akufo-Addo consoles UAE over death of former Dubai president

President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed the government’s and Ghanaians’ condolences to the UAE on the death of its President.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed AL Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, died on Friday at 73 years after suffering a stroke in 2014.

He was buried in accordance with Islamic tradition, and the Federal Supreme Council of the UAE elected Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as his successor.

On Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo called on the UAE’s Ambassador to Ghana to express his condolences over the loss of Sheihk Khalifa, whom he described as a wonderful friend of Ghana.
“A famous servant of his people and a great friend of Ghana has gone to meet his maker.”

“The entire people of Ghana, as well as their government, join me, my wife, and our family in expressing our heartfelt condolences and deep sorrow at the passing of this great leader.”

President Akufo-Addo said in a book of condolences dedicated to the late Emirati king, “May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Almighty’s bossom.” Sheikh Khalifa, who was born in the UAE city of Al Ain in 1948, rose to power in the richest emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2004 and became the UAE’s head of state.

He replaced his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, the UAE’s founder, as the country’s second president.
