Alvarez, Golovkin set for trilogy fight in September

Canelo Alvarez will meet Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy bout on September 17 at super middleweight, according to Matchroom Boxing.

Alvarez, who has all four major super middleweight championships, moved up to light heavyweight earlier this month but was defeated by Russian Dmitry Bivol in only his second career loss.

Golovkin, also known as “GGG,” and Alvarez first clashed in 2017 and fought to a split draw before the 31-year-old Mexican won by points a year later.

“I am delighted to get this made for Sept. 17, and I am delighted to have this made for Canelo v GGG,” Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn said, adding that the venue would be disclosed later.

“These are two men who despise one other and want to put a stop to this fantastic series with a KO.”

Since losing to Alvarez, Kazakhstan’s Golovkin, 40, has won four straight fights.
